Anytime, anywhere, any device work is now the norm, and employees need technologies that support their productivity at and away from their desks or offices.
According to IDC, “by 2020, mobile workers will account for 72% of the U.S. workforce.”
As enterprises prioritize cloud-first architectures for business apps, a new type of worker has emerged, the Cloud Worker.

Cloud Workers are more likely to:
- Operate beyond structures 9–5.
- Spend significant time on the move.
- Use shared device/desktop workstations to access information.
- Work in divers, often global teams.
- Receive and respond to communications over personal devices.
- Expect multiple options as to how, when and where they communicate.
Cloud Workers are most likely to work in:
- 38% marketing
- 38% product/engineering
- 30% IT
- 21% operations
Motivations:
- Self-motivated, provided they have a positive working environment
- Driven by achievement, especially if it is meaningful and contributes to the organization
- Continuous learning extremely important
- Individual routines and patterns of work, which may not conform to the typical office hours
Pain points:
- Time taken to get things done/downtime
- Clunky legacy apps and systems
- Compliance and controls
- Incessant update requests
Generations grow-up expecting rapid comms from anywhere in the world. They expect this to also be the case in the professional arena.
1 in 4 information workers are now Cloud Workers:
- On the move: Remote, on-the-go work across various devices is the norm for the 94% of information workers. 80% report higher morale working from home.
- No border, or barriers: 80% agree that their success depends on instant access to information from a variety of sources.
- Browser first: Workers spend an average 4.6 hours completing tasks on a web browser. In the U.S., 18% spend 5+ hours a day using browser. Cloud Workers consider Chrome primary browser by more than 3–1 over IE and Firefox.
- Early adopters: 66% think new technologies, including AI and AR/VR, will help improve productivity, collaboration and communications.
