Windows Server 2003 EOS: Understand User and Organizational Impact

Last week, we reminded you again about the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 EOS (end of service) deadline: July 14, 2015

Part 1 is about the first pitfall to avoid in operating system migration.

Why do we keep sharing stories about Windows Server 2003 end of service? With less than six months away from the deadline, the clock is ticking on your organization’s migration between now and July 14, 2015.

Besides security risks, you’ll face exorbitant fees if you miss the deadline and need to buy support from Microsoft. For example, a company with 200 servers would face an added expense of $2 million over the course of 24 months.

You’re not alone if you haven’t taken a step toward migration. Many businesses have not addressed the issue—and many have experienced serious drawbacks, escalating the problem to possibly expose millions of computers to cyber attacks and data loss.

For instance, in Part 1 of this series, we discussed the first pitfall to avoid during migration: planning and assessment. It’s crucial that organizations first determine which servers and applications are operating on Windows Server 2003, and how servers and applications interact.

Pitfall No. 2: Failure to Understand User and Organizational Impact

A recurring, common mistake is underestimating the migration’s impact on daily business operations. Organizations have not scheduled resource-intensive migration tasks for off-peak hours and are not applying the right manpower for ongoing management and reporting on project status.

“Validate how you’re going to do this,” says David Mayer, practice director of Microsoft Solutions at Insight. “Are you moving during a time when it will have a negative impact on the organization or a specific user community?”

Mayer recommends using a pre-migration checklist, upgrading hardware where necessary, upgrading to Windows Server 2008R2 or 2012R2, as well as using a post-migration checklist.

While it seems like a lot, the benefits will make up for your efforts in migration. Updating your datacenter will not only decrease your security risk. It will increase performance and lead to decreased energy costs, as servers older than four years deliver 4 percent of the performance while consuming 65 percent of the energy.
