How We Fuse Fun at Work

When you think of work, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Boring? Fun? At Insight, there’s never a dull day. But while we work hard delivering Intelligent Technology™ to help businesses run smarter, we add a side of play. And because it's International Fun at Work Day (January 29), we thought it apropos to share why workplace fun is important.

A new report reveals fun at work can boost productivity and reduce absenteeism. The “It Pays to Play” study commissioned by HR cloud software company BrightHR, found 79% of millennials (aka “Generation Y”) believe fun at work is important, with 44% of this group thinking it encourages harder work. This is compared to the 56% of the 55- to 60-year-old age group saying office fun is important to them, too, but only 14% believe it makes them more productive.

Greatist article cites research that found the impact of fun at work is influenced by age. And Greatist also cites a survey that found up to 88% of Gen Yers want a fun and social workplace; whereas only 60% of boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) do, too.

While workplace fun can predict high job satisfaction and employee retention according to other research in the article, it may reduce productivity. Even “gamifying” work — introducing elements from games into the work environment with the purpose of improving employees’ affective experiences — only helps employees be more productive if they’ve agreed to it.

So what does all this mean? “It’s very important to have fun at work,” says MaryAnne Garcia, talent acquisition director at Insight. “You spend so much time at work, it’s important to love what you do, who you do it with and the company you do it for. Then it doesn’t feel like you are going to ‘work.’ Typically, you are better at what you do when you’re having fun, and you feel a greater sense of accomplishment when you like what you do.”

Pedal for Kids is an annual event teammates in Canada participate in to raise money for the Montreal Children’s hospital.

On Superhero Fun Day, UK teammates dress as superheroes and play games around the office, including pool to help raise money for Josh Wilson (aka SuperJosh). The boy lost his battle to complex neurological disabilities following an operation to remove a brain tumour.

Teammates at global headquarters in Tempe, Arizona, regularly participate in local job fairs to get connected with qualified candidates for jobs we need to fill.
