The Rising Popularity of Office 365

29 Jun 2015 by Jessica Hall

Office 365 is an incredibly powerful tool for organizations, offering collaboration, planning and communication. With many users leveraging its services on a daily basis, it’s no surprise that its popularity is growing among organizations of all sizes.

Signs of increased deployment

Gartner estimates 33% of organizations will employ cloud-based office suites by 2017. By 2022, that figure will jump to 60%, growing to 695 million users.

Okta, an Insight partner providing integrated identity and mobility management, reports Microsoft® Office 365 is rapidly becoming one of the most commonly installed applications. With Okta's network of more than 4,000 applications, this truly is a testament to the benefits of leveraging Office 365. Among Okta’s thousands of customers and their 4 million users, the security service provider also reports that it’s the most commonly used application across their platform.

Why adoption is rising

According to Business Insider, the reasons for Office 365’s recent increased adoption are two-fold.

Instead of buying Exchange servers and hosting communications in their own data centers, organizations can create efficiencies by moving email to the cloud, as they won’t incur the costs of buying new Exchange servers or hosting email in their own data centers.

From the user’s standpoint, it offers familiarity and ease — professionals are accustomed to Outlook, and they get a similar experience with Office 365.

Office 365 also allows your IT department to exercise governance and control over the system, and professionals will experience many other benefits, including increased accessibility, productivity, reliability and security.

Steps for migration

As David Mayer, the practice director of Microsoft solutions at Insight, explained in a recent article, those looking to deploy Office 365 should take inventory of what they have and what Office 365 allows. Following that, your organization will need to develop a migration strategy and plan for a new and different workload.
